The International Research School team invites you to take part in the Science Vacation program at the Baikal Lake (Tankhoy village).
Baikal Lake
Baikal Lake is located in the southern part of eastern Siberia within the republic of Buryatia and Irkutsk region of Russia. It is the oldest existing freshwater lake on Earth (20 million–25 million years old), as well as the deepest continental body of water, having a maximum depth of 1,620 metres. Its area is some 31,500 square km, with a length of 636 km and an average width of 48 km. It is also the world's largest freshwater lake by volume, containing about one-fifth of the fresh water on Earth's surface. Into Lake Baikal flow more than 330 rivers and streams.
Tankhoy village
Tankhoy is a village located on the eastern shore of Lake Baikal at the foot of the Khamar-Daban Mountains, where the office of the Baikal State Nature Biosphere Reserve is lokated. The reserve occupies the central part of the Khamar-Daban Range and goes to the southeastern coast of Lake Baikal. The main purpose of the reserve is to keep the unique local ecosystem and protect the undisturbed cedar forests that cover 70% of its territory.
Due to wet climate, a special flora formed here, so the local vegetation is truly unique. The reserve is also home to 37 species of mammals and 260 species of birds, many of which are protected due to their endangered status. Tourists come here mainly to see the rare birds. Since the first decade of May, after the opening of reservoirs, and to the end of August, it becomes the place of migration and nesting of water birds - shorebirds, ducks, gulls, terns, whooper swans and grebes. You can watch birds and animals from special towers placed throughout the reserve.
Science Program
Science program of the tour includes: - Lectures and workshops; - Science visits in Irkutsk city; - Walking tours around Baikal State Nature Biosphere Reserve; - Completing team research project in ecology, botany, orgnitology or hydrobiology.
Participation
Dates: 2 possible options: - July 2-11, 2024 - August 12-21, 2024
Terms of participation: We invite delegations of your educational organizations to take part in Science Vacations at the Baikal Lake. We welcome delegations of talented high school students (14-17 y.o.) interested in science and new knowledge, asking questions and looking for answers, open to communication with people with different cultural backgrounds. Organizations themselves select students for their teams and provide them with the assistance of a supervising teacher - the delegation coordinator.
Participation fee is 750 euro per participant (student of supervisor). It covers transfer from the Irkutsk airport to the Baikal State Nature Biosphere Reserve and back, accommodation, meals, local transport, scientific and networking program during 9 days of the tour. Delegations are responsible for their travel costs to Irkutsk and back.
