Last time, we started introducing our projects. Now, we’re excited to present the second one: "Population genetics: the story of an invasion."
Why is the Yakut crucian carp disappearing in some rivers of Yakutia? The answer may lie in genetics. Invasive species is gradually replacing the native Yakutian ones. You will study this process using real DNA analysis methods. Over the course of the project, you will master key techniques such as DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis and the basics of statistical analysis in population genetics. You will go through all stages of a full scientific study from samples to conclusions.
This journey will be guided by qualified and deeply knowledgeable tutors. Pavel Nikolayev, an MSU Biology graduate, has studied the genetic diversity of White Sea flounder and worked extensively with school students from Yakutia. Svetlana Nikolayeva is a researcher at the Blokhin Institute of Oncology and also an MSU graduate.
