16TH INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH SCHOOL
IRSchool Projects 2026 (Vol.6): Geophysics & Ecology
27th of May 2026

Hello everyone,
We continue our series of project previews and today is the next one. It is called "Geophysical monitoring of Yakutsk and its suburbs."

Living in a city, you are exposed to various factors that affect your health such as atmospheric pollution, chemical waste, increased noise levels, and electromagnetic fields. But there is another important physical factor that is rarely considered - aeroions. A lack of negative aeroions has a detrimental effect on health, yet in urban conditions the actual values are often lower than recommended standards. During your project course, you will conduct multi-day geophysical monitoring to determine the content of aeroions in various areas of Yakutsk and the Lena River basin, as well as their change over time. You will carry out measurements directly at the sites with scientific sensors, process the data using statistical methods, and monitor the state of the atmosphere through specialized Internet resources. As a result, a map of the aeroion composition and variations of the magnetic field in Yakutsk and its suburbs will be created.

This journey will be guided by two great tutors. Elena Krakhina works as a research engineer at the Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russian Academy of Sciences, and is a winner of the international award "Ecology Is Everyone's Business" in the "Eco-Education" category. Kirill Zenin is a research engineer at the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics in Moscow, specializing in geophysics and ionosphere studies, while also studying pedagogy at the Institute of Education.
