IRSchool Projects 2026 (Vol.7): FIRMS at home
16th of June 2026

Hello everyone,
Today we are back here to present another project from IRSchool 2026. This one is called "FIRMS at home: Forest fire monitoring using Direct Broadcast satellite imagery."
Many weather satellites transmit freshly captured imagery in real time. With modern software-defined radio receivers, this data has become a powerful tool for obtaining scientific information from space. This year’s priority is the detection of wildfire hotspots, and it will help reduce the response time of forest fire services and limit the damage to Yakutia's forests. Over the course of the project, you will build your own antenna, receive radio signals from satellites, process the final imagery, and develop your own image processing tools.
This journey will be guided by two talented tutors. Artem Mardin is a specialist at Yakutsk Aerospace Systems. He is actively involved in the Sakhacube-Cholbon satellite project. Juan Alberto Guevara Jaramillo holds a PhD in physics, works as a scientific advisor at the Mexican Space Agency, and has been a robotics tutor at IRSchool for many years.
